As far as I know it's just the red or green circles that will appear around your boat.

I encountered similar on the Training 10 challenge. Only counted my first 4 races. Lost out on more than nearly 400 places. This happened to me before. Seems to be a common problem that they either can't or can't be bothered to fix.
