Dcarr Posted April 8, 2020 Posted April 8, 2020 That probably did not work so let me try a real question. I created an event. Now how do I access it. I can view in under events, maybe it will be more obvious after the start time. That probably did not work so let me try a real question. - Only 3 more to go (hopefully) Quote
SESCA Posted April 8, 2020 Posted April 8, 2020 @Dcarr Creating an 'Event' simply puts the event on the VR Calendar and, if you set RSVP, allows club members to indicate whether they are intending to race or not. Unfortunately, it does not have any connection to setting up a Custom race, which you have to do manually, immediately before the desired start time. If you try to set up a race too far in advance, it will time out before the players are able to join. 1 Quote
Dcarr Posted April 8, 2020 Posted April 8, 2020 Thank You. A bit of a steep learning curve this platform has. I appreciate your help. Quote

You have to post in different threads or make sure that there is another posting between your posts, otherwise they will be grouped together as one. There actually appears to be no great advantage in becoming a 'Confirmed Member'. It does allow you to set up a 'Club' but other than being then able to post 'Events' on the VR Calendar, there really are no other benefits. Unfortunately, setting up a Club does not allow you to schedule races or collect series results. FYI, it is not only VIP members who can set up custom races. Anyone can, so long as they have accumulated or bought sufficient red tokens. Hi, I'm still trying to get my head around this. Do you reckon that there is a way to set up a regatta/series of races? I'd appreciate any help in the right direction. Many thanks in advance! Quote
scott Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 So, reading this thread with interest. Would really like to setup a custom race for my club as well. Google turned up what I'm guessing is Sesca's eSailing Guide v2 on RYA which is the best thing out there. VR must be really back-logged not to have better instructions out there. Anyway, reading the guide it looks like one person in the club (at least) needs a VIP membership to set up the race and then those who want to join have to have 200 red coins? Is that correct? And that is per race? Can anyone confirm? Thanks Quote
Frankly Scarlet Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 Seems pretty easy... Post 7 times to become a member.... Quote
SESCA Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 @eBowman The only way to run a series is to set up individual custom races, in turn, and then collate the results in a spreadsheet or results package such as SailWave or SailRank. @scott Anyone setting up a custom race needs to be a VIP membership or has to use some red coins (200?). It is not necessary for other players to pay or use any red coins to join a custom race. Quote

skutsje Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Nice to see this forum also gets some more interaction nowadays. Perhaps we should create a random messages topic for people that want to become confirmed. Quote

Halcyon II Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 Something I figured out that might be useful to others; I was initially unable to join a custom race as a non-VIP member, because when you try to do so a pop-up appears promoting VIP membership. Turns out non-VIPs just need to click off of the pop-up and can then join. You do, however need to be a VIP or use 200 red coins to host a custom race. Now my questions: 1. Is there such a thing as a club VIP for all members of a club? 2. What are the features available aimed at clubs, other than creating a club forum? Quote
Halcyon II Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 If you want to organize a series of say 5 races on race day for your club, how do you do that? It looks to me like each race, the organizer needs to start back at the Custom Races page, enter the club password (if any), select the boat, course type and location. Then each member must re-enter the club password... for every race? That's madness. Quote
RBYC Sailing Academy Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 I'd also like to start a club It is frustrating that I can't set a number of races to do at once so I don't have to keep re-entering the information for the races Quote

MacPad Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 This is incredibly hard work, please, please give us a way to get the results from a race without having to take pictures of every page, I really appreciate that the RYA and Virtual Regatta have got together, but not being able to get results from past custom races is a nightmare. Today I forgot to take a picture and now I have no idea of what happened. Please come up with a a solution for all of us trying to run regattas for people during lock down. I currently run around 9 races in a session and looks like this could double possible triple. With no way of knowing which race is which it gets a mess and mistakes are going to be made which will end up with unhappy members....... It would be nice for us to just see the results, what time the race was at, class and course. Additionally how about a the option to just view the race on a code as well so that other club members can find their fellow club members races to watch. In a perfect world it would be nice to be able to setup races in advance, but maybe that's for next month :) Quote
regattaguru Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 If VR would make even a small part of their API available I would be happy to develop a scoring option for them. Quote
John Pearl Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 (edited) Another vote here to improve club race management experience. Currently thinking about work-arounds to get started. Can anyone share how they are managing the scheduling of multiple club races for specific contestants at specific times? Edited April 22, 2020 by John Pearl Quote
Sisu Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 Our club just had its first set of races last night. A few tips: 1. Use some sort of voice app to communicate in races. Discord is popular for gamers, Jitsi is an open-source alternative to Zoom that works well. We used Zoom but it kept kicking us off every 45 minutes. (Suggestion to the developers - allow unrestricted in-race text chat for private races) 2. Either have a set number of races planned for each night or a "no race after" time. That way, if racers drop off the chat, they know whether or not there are still races being run. 3. Sometimes the game will not allow you to reuse passwords on back-to-back races. Either alternate between two or have a designated password for each race (i.e. vyc1, vyc2, vyc3, etc...). 4. Have a designated scorer record results before closing out the race. I just used a paper grid as I would in real life, then inputted scores into Sailwave (my favorite scoring software). If you want to make things a little easier, ask each racer in your club to include a unique number in their boat name, kind of like a sail number, for shorthand recording of results in a large fleet. lemedy Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 Am running a series (5 races) for my club this afternoon. I assume (from reading the threads) I have to keep setting up each race? I have a VIP account but just wanted to check thanks Quote

There seem to be no great advantages of setting up a VR Club for Inshore Regattas, other than being able to enter races on the VR calendar (this is simply a diary entry and does not schedule the start of a race), which allows other club members (registered on the forum) to indicate whether they are intending to race or not, if RSVP is requested. There may be more benefits if competing in Offshore Regatta races (ie I believe that you can get results by Club).
