Luiyo
hello, what would be the best choice of downwind angle on IMOCAs and why? I usually choose the angle with the best VMG, according to the polaires, but I see most other competitors going 10 or 15 degrees higher. that is faster, but the VMG is not so good. what am I doing wrong? another topic, best strategy to sail round the south atlantic high in this leg? I cant find forecast weather that goes more than 7 days.

It is about taking the fastest route. Best VMG does not always take you in good winds. Read the forecast, analyze it and plot your course. As franckhamburg wrote, there is no manual for that. Play and learn. If you want to use, there are routers but do not blindly follow them. Edited January 22 by Bullship
Westwind
Do we have to follow actual competitor rules?@ I believe the real competitors have to skirt the remaining Cape Verde islands to the west according to their rules, but do we have to do this in order to have a fair race? They're all veering westward, most of my competitors are steering east inside the islands. Thanks, Westwind
Bullship
We as virtual skippers are free to race. Going West shows more favourable winds and angles. I would not advise to go coast hugging. Edited January 26 by Bullship
Jenny Colorado
If you use a Mac, you could try LuckGrib for weather routing to compare to the VR Routing. Sometimes they suggest the same routes and other times not, so use your judgment to decide which to follow. Does anyone else use that program?
